Indexing

Indexing is the engine that makes Lumy fast. When you index a drive, Lumy builds a searchable catalog of every file and folder on it. Then the agent can answer questions like "what's in here?" instantly.

Think of it like a table of contents for your drive: Lumy scans everything once, remembers it, and can look things up instantly afterward.

Should you index?

  • Yes, if you want the AI agent to search your files quickly, or you want to use Disk Usage.
  • No, if you only browse folders normally in the File Organizer — that works without indexing.

The Indexing page

At the top you'll see a summary row:

  • Queued drives — how many drives are waiting to be scanned
  • Running drive — the drive being scanned right now, with live progress
  • Completed / Failed — the outcome of recent scans

Below that is a card for each drive, showing its type, used and free space, index size, last scan time, and an Auto-Rescan toggle.

How to index a drive

  1. Select a drive In the drive list, click the checkbox next to the drive you want to index.

  2. Start indexing Click Start Indexing (top-right). The drive goes into the queue and the scan begins.

  3. Wait for completion Watch the progress in the top row. You'll see the current path being scanned and the file count. A notification appears when the scan finishes.

The first scan of a large drive can take a while — even hours for drives with more than a terabyte. That's normal. You can keep using Lumy while the scan runs in the background.

After indexing

Once a drive is indexed:

  • It appears in the Disk Usage treemap.
  • The agent in the File Organizer can search it instantly.
  • The drive card shows the last scan time and index size.

Auto-Rescan

Toggle Auto-Rescan on for a drive, and Lumy will automatically re-scan it in the background whenever the drive's free space changes by more than 1% of its total capacity.

Auto-Rescan is great for drives that change often — like external SSDs or network drives.

Removing an index

Right-click a drive card and choose Delete Index. This removes Lumy's catalog for that drive — your actual files are untouched.

Filtering the list

Use the drive-type dropdown (All Types / SSD / Fixed Drives / Removable / Network / Indexed) and the search box to find specific drives in long lists.

Orphaned indexes

If you remove a drive (for example, unplug an external SSD) without deleting its index first, Lumy will notice on next launch and offer to clean up the leftover index. Click Delete index in the prompt.

Common issues

  • A scan is taking forever — that's normal for large drives. You can stop it with the cancel button on the drive card, and resume later.
  • A scan failed — check the card's status color (red = failed). Try starting the scan again.
  • A drive doesn't appear — make sure it's connected and visible in Windows Explorer first.
