Frequently asked questions
What exactly is Lumy?
Lumy is a Windows app that combines a file organizer, a disk usage map, a PC cleanup tool, and an AI assistant in one place. The AI assistant helps you manage your files by following simple instructions you type in plain language.
Is Lumy free?
Yes. Lumy is free to use.
Is Lumy private?
Yes — by default. Lumy runs locally on your PC:
- Your files never leave your computer.
- Your chat requests only leave your computer if you choose a cloud AI provider (OpenAI, OpenRouter, Anthropic).
- Lumy has no telemetry — it doesn't track usage or phone home.
See the Privacy page for details.
Do I need to set up an AI model?
Only if you want to use the AI assistant. Browsing files, seeing disk usage, and running cleanups all work without a model.
To use the assistant, you'll need to connect a model — either a local one (LM Studio or Ollama) or a cloud one. See AI setup.
Can Lumy run offline?
Yes. If you connect a local model (LM Studio or Ollama), everything runs entirely on your PC with no internet connection required.
What file types can Lumy read?
The agent can read the text from:
- PDF documents
- Word documents (DOC and DOCX)
- Excel spreadsheets (XLS, XLSX, and related formats)
- CSV files
- Plain text files (TXT)
Is anything permanently deleted?
No. Lumy always uses the Windows Recycle Bin for deletions. Nothing is permanently deleted unless you empty the Recycle Bin yourself in Windows.
Can I undo something the agent did?
Yes. Every action is recorded in History & Restore, where you can undo single steps or entire tasks. See History & Restore.
Is Lumy safe for my files?
The agent is deliberately limited for safety:
- It only touches files inside the folder you have open.
- Destructive actions ask for confirmation first.
- Everything is reversible.
See the File Organizer page for details.
Which Windows versions are supported?
Lumy runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, on both x64 and arm64 processors.
How many languages does Lumy support?
13 languages, plus a "System default" option that follows your Windows language. See Settings.
How do I update Lumy?
Lumy checks for updates automatically. You can also open Settings → Check for Updates anytime. Updates never delete your files or history.
Does Lumy work on a Mac or Linux?
No. Lumy is a native Windows app built with WinUI 3.
Where is my data stored?
Everything is stored locally on your PC:
- Indexes: one SQLite database per indexed drive, in
%AppData%\LumyDesktop\ - History:
%AppData%\LumyDesktop\history.db - Settings: in Lumy's application data folder
